Dual SIM phones: how they work and the catches

Key takeaways

  • A dual SIM phone can use two SIMs at once, so one phone can have two numbers or two plans. Newer phones usually pair a physical SIM with an eSIM, and some use two physical SIMs or two eSIMs.
  • On a dual SIM phone, each SIM keeps its own number, so two SIMs can't share one number. You choose which SIM handles calls, texts and mobile data. Only one SIM can use mobile data at a time.
  • Most dual SIM phones can receive calls on both SIMs. But a call to one SIM usually goes to voicemail while you're on a call on the other. Two different networks work together fine, as long as the phone is unlocked.

You've spotted "dual SIM" in a phone spec, or your settings have suddenly started showing SIM 1 and SIM 2. It's fair to wonder what it means and whether it's useful or just more faff.

Short version: it's handy, as long as you know the few catches. Here's how dual SIM phones work, what you can and can't do with them, and how to check if yours is one.

What is a dual SIM phone?

Dual SIM means a phone can use two SIMs at the same time. You'll also see them called 2 SIM, two SIM or double SIM phones. This gives you two phone numbers or two plans on one phone.

The two SIMs can be set up in a few ways:

  • Two physical SIMs: the phone has two SIM slots, or one tray that holds two cards.
  • One physical SIM and one eSIM: the phone uses a normal SIM card plus a SIM built into the phone.
  • Two eSIMs: both SIMs are built in. Some newer phones can do this, and a few have no SIM tray at all.

Not sure what an eSIM is? Our eSIM guide covers it.

How do dual SIM phones work?

Both SIMs work independently on the phone. Each has its own number, plan and bill. The phone just lets you pick which one to use.

Type What it means What you'll notice
Dual standby Both SIMs are switched on and can receive calls and texts, but the phone can only be on a call with one SIM at a time. If you're on a call on SIM 1, a call to SIM 2 usually goes to voicemail.
Dual active Both SIMs stay live at the same time. A call can come in on one SIM while you're talking on the other.

Dual standby is how iPhones work, and it's common on Android phones too.

Missing calls on your second SIM is the main catch. On some phones, WiFi calling on the second SIM lets you answer it mid-call. That depends on your network and phone, so it's worth checking before you rely on it.

SIM 1, SIM 2 and your default SIM

SIM 1 and SIM 2 are just labels for your two SIMs. Your phone also lets you pick a default SIM, which it uses unless you say otherwise. You can usually choose a different default for each of these:

  • Calls: which number the phone calls from.
  • Texts: which number messages are sent from.
  • Mobile data: which SIM's data allowance gets used. Only one SIM can use mobile data at a time.

You can still pick the other SIM for a single call or text. You'll find the settings under SIM, SIM manager or Mobile Service, depending on your phone.

Can you have two SIM cards with the same number?

No. Each SIM has its own number, and a number can only be active on one SIM at a time. Moving a number to a new SIM or eSIM disables the old one.

Some networks offer paid add-ons to share a number with a smartwatch or tablet. Dual SIM phones don't do this automatically. To send calls to another phone, use call forwarding. Ask your network how to set it up.

Can you use two different networks on a dual SIM phone?

Yes. Each SIM works with its own network, so you can put SIMs from two different networks in one phone.

The catch is network locks. If your phone is locked to a single network, it won't accept a SIM from another network. Most phones sold in the UK today come unlocked. Check with the network you bought it from before you pop in a new SIM.

How to check if your phone is dual SIM

  1. Check the SIM tray. Two slots, or one slot on a phone that also supports eSIM, means the phone can run two SIMs.
  2. Check your settings. If you see SIM 1 and SIM 2, a SIM manager, or an option to add an eSIM, your phone supports dual SIM.
  3. Look for two IMEI numbers. Dial *#06# on the keypad. A dual SIM phone usually shows two unique ID numbers, one for each SIM. On an iPhone, you can also find them in Settings, then General, then About.

What are dual SIM phones good for?

  • Work and personal: keep a work number and a personal number on one phone, so you only carry one phone.
  • Travelling: add a local or travel SIM abroad while your home number stays on the other SIM, which can help with roaming costs.
  • Getting a good deal: use one SIM for calls and texts and another for a bigger data allowance.
  • Coverage: use two networks, so if one has weak signal where you are, the other might do better.

Which phones have dual SIM?

Plenty of phones support dual SIM, at every price. As of October 2026, these popular models do:

  • iPhone: the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max and every later model, including the iPhone 17, support a physical SIM plus an eSIM. The iPhone 13 and later can also run two eSIMs.
  • Samsung Galaxy: recent Galaxy phones, including the Galaxy S26 and Galaxy A56 5G, support a physical SIM plus an eSIM.
  • Google Pixel: the Pixel 3a and later support eSIM, so they can pair it with a physical SIM.

Using SMARTY in a dual SIM phone

If you're on SMARTY, you can use your SIM as the second SIM in a dual SIM phone, as long as the phone is unlocked. SMARTY comes as a physical SIM or an eSIM, so it can sit alongside your other SIM. That works whichever way your phone handles two.

A dual SIM phone is mostly about having a bit more choice. Set your default SIM once, and you can pretty much forget it's there.

FAQs

Can you have two SIM cards with the same number?

No. Each SIM has its own phone number, so two SIMs in one phone means two numbers. A number can only be active on one SIM at a time, so moving a number to a new SIM stops the old SIM working.

Can both SIMs be used at the same time?

Both SIMs can be switched on and ready to receive calls and texts at the same time. On most phones, only one SIM can be on a call at once, and only one SIM can use mobile data at a time. Dual active phones can take a call on one SIM while the other SIM is busy.

Do you have to use two SIMs in a dual SIM phone?

No. A dual SIM phone works perfectly well with just one SIM, and the second slot or eSIM can stay empty until you need it. You can add a second SIM or eSIM at any time.
